All the language courses outlines are based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages – a guideline, organised by the Council of Europe, that describes the achievements of learners of foreign languages across Europe and worldwide, providing a method of assessment in teaching which applies to all languages in Europe.

 

Spanish Beginners Course

10 Week Course (2 hour sessions)

Mondays 18.30 – 20.30

Course description

The topics for this course are: first contacts around, arranging meeting time and place, eating and drinking, day-to-day activities. You will know how to greet and introduce yourself and other people, ask and give personal information, tell the time, talk about daily activities, make plans/invitations, order food and drinks, expressing likes and dislikes and talk about past activities.

Grammar: alphabet, personal/possessive/demonstrative pronouns, main prepositions, modal verbs (main ones), present simple, nouns: masculine/feminine, plural/singular, immediate future, present continuous and simple past (introduction).

 

Spanish Elementary Course

10 Week Course (2 hour sessions)

Tuesdays 18.30 – 20.30

Course description

The topics for this course are: daily routine (present and past),  getting around, parts of the house and body. You will know how to talk about your present and past daily routine and events, express wishes, preferences and doubts, to confirm something/to complain, ask for directions/location, to give advice, to define and identify things, to express contentment, to compare and contrast and to talk about past activities and events.

Grammar: irregular verbs, present continuous (revision), imperative form, past tenses, prepositions of place, comparative, further work on pronouns, more plural nouns, more adjectives.

 

 Spanish Lower Intermediate Course

10 Week Course (2 hour sessions)

Wednesdays 18.30 – 20.30

Course description

The topics for this module are: people’s characteristics, sports, jobs/work, clothing, invitations: intercultural differences. You will learn how to describe people and things, express preferences, talk about health issues, express empathy, disapproval, wishes, concerns in a more elaborate way.

Grammar: further work on comparisons, contrasting past tenses, future (review), some conditional tenses and subjunctive mode (introduction).

 

Spanish Intermediate Course

10 Week Course (2 hour sessions)

Thursdays 10.30am – 12.30pm

Course description

The topics for this module are: family, parties/festivals, tourism, ecology and nature, the regions in Spain, stereotypes, influences and traditions in the Spanish culture. You will learn how to further express preferences, certainty, possibilities, hopes, give advice, compare, express empathy.

Grammar: revision of present/past/future tenses, adverbs, indefinite pronouns, passive voice, participle, further work on prepositions, subjunctive tenses.

 

Spanish Upper Intermediate Course

10 Week Course (2 hour sessions)

Fridays 18.30 – 20.30

Course description

The topics for this module are: the Spanish world, Spanish poetry and art, school, university, careers, the job market, popular beliefs, radio, TV and press. You will learn how to ask for and give opinions about activities, express hope and convictions, express uncertainties and possibilities and wishes/contentment/doubts. Promising/offering to do something and express indifference/trust.

Grammar: passive voice, past participle, conditionals, subjunctive mode (present, future and past).

 

Spanish Advanced Course

10 Week Course (2 hour sessions)

Saturdays 18.30 – 20.30

 Course description

The topics for this module are: Spanish regional differences and economic issues, services, politics and History, literature. You will learn how to give advice, debate and move between different registers: persuading, theorising, story-telling, arguing.

Grammar: advanced use of verbs and prepositions, appropriate use of tenses, a closer look at the subjunctive, slang and idioms, regional variations in Spanish.
